… The technological developments of the past thirty years constitute a major shift from the industrial to the post-industrial information society, where the unit of inFORMation, its structures, processes and systems increasingly define notions such as body, matter, space and time. It introduces in their definition new parameters such as immersion and interactivity (perception/cognition) but also the one of networks (shared resources/ tele-presence) as the one of materiality (analog/digital) - among many other aspects. Technologies based on the transmission, editing and computation of information thus more and more influence organization models (modes of production, of work and of knowledge) and affect the communication process (code, signs…) and the social, economic… relations as well as their spatialization.

In order to examine these implications of new communication and computation technologies within spatio-temporal structures lab|au| develops a transdisciplinary …> approach based on different artistic and scientific methods.

As a collaborative agency …>, including different partners from different disciplines, lab|au| sets up a network of transdiciplinary work focusing on the specific modalities of IC technologies in their setting of languages as well as their founding of a discipline, Meta.Design …>

Based on new working methods and processes and the setting of new working spaces such as the 0.1lab …> and ESDN (electronic space development network)…> these collaborative and transdisciplinary processes become an important vector in the development, diffusion and mediation of projects.Through these structures, la.b[au] pursuits since its foundation in 1995 the objective to link theoretical research the lab with the specific conditions in the elaboration and production of inFORMational projects la.BAU . lab|au| thus constitutes a critical space of reflection and experimentation to examine the transformation of architecture and urbanism in its founding and methods according to the technological progress leading to the development and definition of new practices - 'metadesign'

In this manner Metadesign displays the theme of new space constructs relative to information processes, as the formalization of communication and computation processes according to social, semantic and spatial structures (architecture) as much as on the level of language (code, structure) - it is the definition of architecture like codes / language drawn from concepts of communication and information sciences (connectivism and connexionism) with that of architecture. Metadesign [meta= information about information] as a discipline is about the transposition of inFORMation processes, transmission and computation, in textual, graphical, spatial and multi-dimensional forms, in order to build up connectivity and effectiveness.

'Metadesign' thus can be understood as a technology determinism that constitutes the main vector/thought in the concern of networked, information-based societies.
