Version>02

April 18, 19, 20, (21), 2002
Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 East Chicago Avenue

OVERVIEW:

For the first iteration of this event new media producers, artists, musicians, filmmakers, programmers, tactical media provocateurs, designers, information architects, and critical thinkers are asked to comment on the state of the digital commons.

Version>02 is a tour through "the digital commons" and offers an opportunity to meet those who tend to the gardens, fences, and pathways, and to investigate the threats and opportunities that the digital commons face. The MCA Theater offers three days of musical performances, films, and a series of panel discussions. The Version Lab, adjacent to the theater, provides performance space for multimedia artists, video makers, and musicans, and The Lobby is transformed into an informational space for web installations and demonstrations by some of the best in the emergent media arts cultures.
The navigation on the left introduces the main themes and programs during the convergence. Version>02 features a three day film festival (Screen Version) , symposium (Round Table Version), featured concerts (Stage Version), a multimedia performance and workshop lab (Lab Version), a net gallery (Net Version), an offsite and related events component (Street Version), publishing projects (Print Version) and a powerful publishing system used to post ideas, comments, and a growing database of articles that relate to the issues surrounding the digital commons and Version>02 (Exchange Version). If you are interested in learning about the topics that we hope to discuss during the convergence please browse through the Exchange Version site.

Net Gallery

In continuing the theme of the digital commons the Net Gallery deals with the issues of identity, community, ownership, and the continuing evolution of tools that allow us to create and share ideas.

Space Navigable Music

LAB[au] elaborates a 'metadesign' investigating the implications of new communication and computation technologies within spatio-temporal (space-time) structures as well as their forms of representation such as architecture and urbanism.

> We had a lot of great submissions and I want to thank everyone for
> taking the time to send us your materials. It was a difficult task
> but we wanted to be sure that the pieces in the net gallery
> represented the digital commons theme in a way that would fit in and
> increase the dialogue of the entire festival.
> Thanks,
