iMage, 5° festival internazioale di architettura in video , "il futuro e la citta". 30novembre - 17 dicembre 2000

" IMAGE is a structure devoted to the architectural communication development. Among its main targets, there is the elaboration and the realization of works and initiatives useful to the growth of a reflection about the role of the digital tecnologies in the production, comunication and exploitation of architecture. The growth and diffusion of information systems place architecture in a transformation stage. The media and the visual tecnologies are getting a more and more decisive role in the architectural production processes and that requests a critical reflection and the statement of innovative strategies. A conscious use of comunication systems can be an effective tool for the knowledge exploitation, and development of contemporary architecture. IMAGE activity is directed to the growth of architecture as a science as well as to the growth of the architectural professionality within the larger task of promoting architectural culture in Italy and in the world. IMAGE is the operative organizer of the International Festival for Architecture in Video, annual event cared by The PMPE Department of the University of Florence, School of Architecture, devoted to the architecture comunication through the screen.

Università degli Studi di Firenze Facoltà di Architettura Dipartimento di Processi e Metodi della Produzione Edilizia 5th INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL FOR ARCHITECTURE IN VIDEO THE FUTURE AND THE CITY 30 November /

The 5th International Festival for Architecture in Video of Florence will run from 30th of November till 17th of December. This exhibition is promoted by University of Florence, DPMPE, realised by iMage. The Festival of Florence is one of the most important exhibition devoted to the communication of architecture with video, film and New Media. Presentation of the most recent works of architects and students, reflection on the utilisation of audio-visual means and information technologies for architecture, research of their didactic applications, discussion of emerging theories are among its first aims. The 5th International Festival for Architecture in Video, realised as in the previous years with the patronage of Regione Toscana, Provincia of Florence, Provincia of Prato and Comune of Florence, continues the program extending the survey to very interesting and actual themes, gathering in Florence the international consideration for new technologies in communication of architecture. >THE FUTURE AND THE CITY The 5th International Festival for Architecture in Video central theme is projects for urban transformations. The Festival will emphasise the role of architecture in redefinition of spaces and the development of new strategies for reconstruction and/or urban improvement."

Text:

LAB[au], laboratory for architecture and urbanism, has been founded in 1995 with the objective to combine theoretical works and writings, LABORATORY, with the works of conception and production LA.Bau. According to this methodology Lab(au) elaborates an hyperdesign investigating the implications of new technologies of communication and computation in space-time structures and in their multiple forms of representation, such as architecture and urbanism. Throughout the work of architecture, urbanism, scenographies and media architecture LAB[au] conceive an architecture of information, based on computation and communication processes. Architecture is thus defined as code/language, an hypermedia.

DATASCAPE // ANIMATION Presentation http://www.lab-au.com Data_scapes are data-driven simulation displays based on dynamic interrelations of statistical, spatial, temporal…information processes with graphical or spatial visualization devices. The programming of such simulations initiates and feeds the conception process with dynamic space-time parameters allowing not only a dynamic and statistical grasp of fluctuating systems, such as infrastructural, activities, communication…flows, but also to understand complex interaction processes, such as congestion, growth, global exchanges…The programming of time in space constitutes a new method of analysis and simulation of complex phenomena and establishes a pragmatic and operational position of the architect who refuses to fix a structure in one given state. These data-driven environments therefore provide the architect with a tool that anticipates the complex decisional and supervising process (conception, realization and communication) in order to extend the traditional methods of planification to new accelerated space-time parameters such as communication and computation flows. Yet, besides the operational tool, these data driven constructs can even become new space constructs by themselves - a dynamic architecture according to material and immaterial processes in the construct of space. The introduction of computational technologies transforms the role of the architect in the design process. The architect thus becomes a trigger, a catalyst and a designer of a generated and initiated architecture, an architecture of inFORMation - a hyperdesign. The 'light_scape(s), displacement maps' project is a lightplan study for the 'Heizel plateau' in Brussels (1999), covering such a research for operative tools in order to conceive light as a dynamic and polysemic vector in the urban matrix. The data-processed light plan creates changing 'light scapes' throughout the temporal programming of light in space according to structural (static) as well as programmatic (dynamic) and individual (interactive) devices. Light is mapped as a fluid and immaterial scape over the existing space opening up to a new experience of the public realm. © LAB[au]

METALAB // WEBSITE Presentation

The 'Meta_lab' is an interactive graphic database designed as an hypertextural navigation system throughout theoretical writings, research works and architectural projects by LAB[au], laboratory for architecture and urbanism. Conceived as a general navigation system interconnecting dispatched web-sites it offers project previews (text+ images) and multiple accesses and reading forms. The combination and interconnection of different indexing forms, space - time - structure and concepts, the interface operates as an intertextual comprehension of the projects which can directly be related to a larger investigation on information structuring, display and access examining the semantic and spatial mutation of architecture by computation and communication processes. The navigation system combines two different reading forms: a linear, chronological… subject-catalogue, 'header', and a rhizomatic and re-centering card index, 'the hyperscape'. The dynamic card index operates by successive centering of displayed topics which the user can, by clicking on the central topic, extend to a contextual toolbar allowing him/her to get images shots and text cuttings on the related subject. By constantly re-centering on chosen issues, the navigation system allows a continuous reading, interpolating multiple hyperlinks to subjects, thus building up an intertextual and transversal understanding of the presented work. By tracing and mapping the individual path of a user throughout a textual protocol, the profiler not only displays the personal associations and understandings, a memex, but extend the interface to communication processes, mailing. Each user can add comments to the protocol and send/edit it as a personal profile to concerned persons. In this manner the 'Meta_lab' project exploits inFORMation processes, communication and computation, related to the topic of hypertextures (structure/semantics) as a new eSPACE CONSTRUCTion. © LAB[au]
