theme:

[ 1. The Society of Design. In the last decade, design has become more important than ever. Everything is designed, and designer is the new cultural hero. Why? Is this simply the new stage of a consumer society, where object's symbolic/imaginary use rule over functionality? And we celebrate architects and product designers, what about interactive designers?
[ 2. Nether Function nor Form. How is the old formular of modernist design "form follows function" shall be rewritten for informational age? As can be seen from such characteristic objects of the last decade as Frank Gerry Guggenheim Bilbao or Philippe Stark's toothbrush or other objects, design today emphasizes narrative/fantasy and play over bare bones functionality. In short, in IT society form does not follow function. But at the same time, the switch from objects to software complicates the old idea of function as well. For a while now, software programs allowed their users to customise what options appear on the menus, thus literally changing the function of the (software) object. Thus, form does not follow function while function itself can be customised by the user.
[ 3. Information design and Play. Modernist design was ruled by efficiency: making visual communication as efortless as possible. But in IT society where information processing forms the substance of both work and leasure, effiency no longer rules. The blurring of boundaries between work and leasure leads to the following phenomenon: information design and information architecture are expected to provide the user with the sense of play, intrigue, discovery and narrative. In other words, (information-processing) labor in IT society acquires characteristics of leasure: it is redefined as fun.
[ 4. The End of Design? Our design strategies -- the visual organisation of a whole page, the use of typography as the key design element, spatial metaphors, etc. -- maybe obsolete in the age of search engine, WAP phones and Palm Pilot. When the users deals not with dozens or hundreds but with billions of items and when these items have be retrived over a variety of displays and hardware interfaces, a simple text-based interface takes over. Will full unfolding of IT society make information design obsolete?
texte de présentation LAB[au] :
inFORMation processes, computation and transmission, influence organisation models (modes of production, work and knowledge) and affect communication processes (code, symbol), social relations as well as their spatialisation. Eventually, the passage from analog to digital technology leads to the fundamental re-thinking of the organization and definition of space as well as their forms of representation, such as architecture and urbanism, 'eSPACE CONSTRUCTionS' .
Such transposition of inFORMation processes in textual, graphical, three-dimensional and biomorphic forms, constitutes a hyperdesign exploring new space constructs proper to the electronic medium and outlines the spatial and semantic mutation of our environment operated by technologies. Metadesign is a technology and media determinism that constitutes the main vector/thought in the perception and conception of networked, information-based societies.
