ABOUT

Les Dessous du Patrimoine was created to foster a dialogue between Rouen’s architectural heritage and contemporary art. Through site-specific works engaging with public space and the city’s historic monuments, the event invited audiences to encounter contemporary art throughout Rouen. Curated by Laure Delamotte-Legrand, it was presented in three editions from 2007 to 2009.

The binary Waves installation comprises 40 kinetic and luminous panels rotating on their vertical axes. Each panel presents a mirror-black surface on one side and a matte white surface on the other, producing optical effects that reflect and transform the surrounding architecture.

The panels propagate data through light, sound and movement, referring to language and binary code. Their sound forms a rhythmic layer reminiscent of Morse code and the communication structures of information systems. Networked microprocessors synchronise the installation, controlling the frequency of each impulse and the amplitude of each panel’s rotation.

Each impulse travels from panel to panel, generating a wave-like movement across the installation. Upon reaching the final panel, it reverses direction while gradually losing intensity. This kinetic system draws on the propagation of waves through water, translating it into the binary logic of the artwork.
